A short checklist to run through before adding another tool to a stack that may already be too full.

New AI tools appear every week. Most look impressive in a demo. Very few solve a problem you actually have.

Before you buy another one, it is worth asking a small number of honest questions.

Start with the problem, not the tool

The most useful question is simple: what specific task, decision, or bottleneck is this tool meant to remove? If the answer is vague, the tool will not be the thing that fixes it.

Look at what you already own

Many businesses already pay for tools with capabilities they never turned on. Adding another subscription on top of unused capacity rarely produces the result the owner is hoping for.

Key Takeaways

  • A tool cannot fix a process that has not been defined.
  • Audit what you already pay for before adding anything new.
  • If a tool needs a specialist to run it, budget for the specialist too.

Questions Worth Sitting With

  • What problem am I actually trying to solve?
  • Am I already paying for a tool that could do this?
  • Who on my team will own this after the excitement fades?
